Zen Meditation & Boxing Training

Homepage

What does meditation have to do with boxing ?

There was an expose that described that warriors or soldiers had an easier path to enlightenment than  others because they had faced death already.

If  you watch championship fights there is a lot of pre-fight anticipation.

Some boxers use stuff to get hyped up 'I'm gonna kill him' Ali style but the one's I like to watch are those who remain  calm and meditative throughout the pre-fight process.

Kostya Tzyu was one such fighter.

Boxing in it's nature with only 10-12 techniques with both hands in total is pure Zen and simplicity is it's key to understanding. By repeating but focussing on each technique with the same intensity and concentration every time as if it were the first the student will have a series of enlightening moments spaced spasmodically apart lifting him to a new level of understanding of technique and his place in the universe.

Sound like the ravings  of a lunatic... remember most things you hear are  not necessarily the truth but this could be an interesting lie.

Part of using wraps instead of  inner gloves gives time even in training for a student to perform ritual. Rituals calm us in the face of battle and should almost  be superstitious and obsessive in their process. It is a little like walking those final steps on death  row, it is then not so much how the man lived but the dignity he can face his end with.

From time to time we do structured meditation in class and I teach the techniques I have learnt through 30 years of martial arts training regarding breathing and controlling extraneous thoughts.
